What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

I was talking to Joe this afternoon about what kind of job he wanted to have when he became an adult. He loves to study astronomy and for awhile he really wanted to be an astronaut, now he is not so sure.

I guess it is OK to not really know what you want to be when you are in high school. I never thought I would be an elementary school teacher. I didn't start thinking along those lines until my second year in college.

I had many aspirations for myself when I was younger. I remember changing my mind over the years as well.

The first thing I wanted to be was a vacuum cleaner. I am not really sure why I wanted to be a vacuum, maybe because it picked things up quickly. I remember my mother always asking me to pick up crumbs off the floor, so me wanting to be a vacuum cleaner would make sense, especially since I was around 3 or 4 years old.

Another thing I wanted to be was a monster. I think that my family got a good laugh about that because I remember them always asking me to tell everyone what I wanted to be when I grew up. Maybe I wanted to be a monster because I would be able to scare everyone, I'm not sure.

I also remember wanting to be a telephone. Being a telephone would have enabled me to hear everyones conversations. Perhaps I was a curious child who wanted to know what everyone was saying, maybe I was just nosey.

When I was older, I wanted to be an interior designer. I liked rearranging furniture and thought that it would be fun to decorate houses for a living.

In many ways I have fulfilled all of my goals and dreams. I am constantly picking up after everyone as well as vacuuming the floor, I am sometimes a monster to live with, I am on the phone so much that one would think that it is permanently attached to my ear, and I enjoy decorating my house.

I think that Joe really wants to be a rock star. He didn't mention it this afternoon but I can tell he is thinking about it. He has a lot of talent and he is constantly playing his many guitars.

Being a rock star can be pretty scary, but I guess being a vacuum cleaner can be pretty scary too.

Maybe he should test out his rock star aspirations by joining our band.

Okay, I got a kick out of everything you wanted to be when you were little. I am glad you got everything you ever wanted out of life!
