Marty and I arrived in Washington DC yesterday. After an all day flight we made our way to our hotel, quickly checked in and headed for the "monument by moonlight" tour. We got there just in time to jump on the bus and look at the monuments, but we didn't get there in time to get anything to eat. The monuments were fantastic! Marty really liked the Korean War monument. When we made it back to our hotel we were starving. We stopped at a CVS. There wasn't much of a selection there, so I settled on ice cream.
This morning we made our way to Mount Vernon. We decided to take the metro to the bus station instead of paying $47.00 each for a tour. Together with admission and bus fare we only spent $30.00 for both of us. Both Marty and I loved Mount Vernon. A funny thing was that one minute we were dry and hot outside and the next minute we were drenched! We happened to be outside walking to George Washington's house right when a storm blew through. We stayed wet most of the morning and by the afternoon, we were hot and dry and wishing we were wet and cold. We stayed at Mount Vernon a lot longer than I thought we would because Marty had to read everything. I read all the signs and all of the display items, but if there were words to be found anywhere, Marty read them.
We left Mount Vernon around 3:00 and headed over to the Arlington National Cemetery. We saw Robert E. Lee's house, the changing of the guard, and JFKennedy's tomb. Once Marty was finished reading everyone's tombstone we went to the Iwo Jima memorial and sat down on the lawn to watch a concert by the Marines. They had a marching band and we especially liked the silent drill. This silent drill was done with precise marching and gun movements. It's hard to describe, but it was great to watch.
We finished our day by eating at a wonderful Italian restaurant that is right next to our hotel. The food was so good that we took our leftovers in a to-go box with plans to eat it cold tomorrow.
